verbiose: an excerpt (1/5/26)

Because I really cared about him, and we spent night in motels.
Not in the way you think. We were playing house, or trying to, but got interrupted by phone calls and tennis lessons for his uncle’s sons (his cousins, he didn’t call them that). His uncle’s wife. His mom’s friend. “You know that one person, her older sister…” always the verbiose, roundabout way of saying things. Something I found charming, not something I disliked.
He had too many positive qualities. I was overwhelmed by being in love with a great man who I thought was much better than me. That’s what real love is like; messy, a little feral.
